Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to operate beyond this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services such as security patches and technical assistance that keep your system safe and reliable.
Why This Matters for Business Owners
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly exposed to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is vital.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some programs may malfunction or cease to work entirely.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or operating under strict regulations risk non-compliance by using outdated OS, potentially leading to fines or legal issues.
Your Upgrade Options
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, which may trigger upgrade errors.
If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
- Switch to a Linux operating system
- Avoid ignoring the deadline, as this puts your business at significant risk (not recommended!)
Always back up your data before making any changes. This safeguards your important files throughout the transition.
Extended Security Updates for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for one year after the October deadline. This is a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.
To access ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, there is a free option requiring you to enable Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB free storage; additional space may be necessary for larger backups.
Don't delay—register for ESU before October 14 to remain protected.
